ZN
2025, limited edition book of ongoing project
Communities form where people see opportunities. Photographer Alies Torfs' family also moved to the quiet Kempen region for the Vieille-Montagne zinc factory. During her studies in Stockholm, she discovered that the zinc in question was mined in the middle of Sweden, in a mirror-perfect village opposite the one where she grew up. Thus began a study of these two worlds, each at one end of the route from ore to product, and the life that developed around them, including her own.
It's always ourselves we find in the sea.

Water. Visually, it is endlessly flexible: transparent or opaque, roughly textured or extremely smooth, taking on whatever color and light seems to surround it. Much like memory, it is molded by its environment and can either perfectly reflect it or distort it. And just as memories are being pushed by the unceasing passage of time, water seems to constantly be on the move. Tracing its path and understanding its flow, we hope to find a logic to teach us how to control this element. In the same vein, we aim to sculpt a story from our lives.
